I freely confess I was a little reluctant to venture out last night, but I knew I’d regret it if I didn’t. So, into the gloom and murk it was. The first few of my twenty miles to the Club is on country lanes, not a white line or street light in sight. At one point a stretch of 40 or 50 yards was flooded the full width of the lane to the depth of several inches. Half way through there was a field gate with a tractor parked inside, lights ablaze. Was he there ready to tow out low-slung petrol cars? Was he there failing to clear the road? Either way I was just glad of good ground clearance and a diesel engine. All the lanes were littered with debris blown down from trees; we’re talking branches not twigs here. The main roads were even less comfortable with the usual loons still driving on the rear bumper of the car in front or overtaking just to screech to within an inch of the next car in line. Do some of these idiots have no dimmer on their headlights? If they do, they surely don’t know how to use them. In that weather, when every second is spent assessing the road surface ahead, even a few seconds of main beam in the eyes is potentially fatal.

Right, back to the Quiz Night. I don’t think there were any last minute dropouts and the Clubhouse was packed with Members, friends and family. What amazed me was the fact we were actually all sitting down ready to start on time, even after getting our drinks.

Quizmaster Alan Brown kept the questions flowing at a steady pace throughout the first half and after the scores were tallied up, it was clear the end result was still wide open. Just the way we like it.

The half time break saw the usual scrum around the buffet tables. As usual Club Members had each brought a plate or bowl to add to the buffet and as usual they had jointly produced a magnificent spread. By the way, whose idea was it for the ladies to go to the table first? I want some equality next time. Some of our ladies can really pack it away. Not that there was any shortage, it’s just that I was still going strong on the savouries when they started on the sweet stuff. I was afraid I might miss out on Sheila’s bowl. I don’t have a particularly sweet tooth, but it was one of the main reasons I ventured out in the first place. No worries though, I did get a generous helping.

There was still food on the table after we’d dealt with the raffle and moved on to the second half of the quiz.

After some of Quizmaster Alan’s more bizarre judgements in the awarding of bonus half points before supper, it was inevitable there would be some clarification sought as he put the later questions, as to the likely awards when marking. He still managed some awards for extra, unsolicited information! Next time I’m going to write a page and a half on every answer and let him pick the bones out of that.

Now to the climax of the evening, the eagerly awaited announcement of the evening’s winners. Clearly the narrow lead enjoyed at half time, had totally demoralised the opposition and that hand-full of intellectual giants that made up the team sitting by the buffet stormed to an overwhelming victory over the loaded table of Newberys that had held the title from the last Quiz Night. Sadly the other teams had fallen by the wayside as these two super-teams paved the way for a clash of potentially epic proportions when next they meet.

I suppose it is only fair to announce the makeup of that winning team. It was comprised of Sheila Mead, Mo Dickinson, Tracey Lowe, Paul Pope and you’ve guessed it, yours truly.

All in all it was a thoroughly entertaining evening; good company, good food, a drink or two (non-drivers of course) and a teasing quiz.

Thanks of course to our Social Committee, but special thanks must go to Alan & Sheila Waters for all their efforts getting the room ready, compiling the quiz, checking the sheets and collating the results and of course to our long suffering Quizmaster, Alan Brown.

Yet again the “I’m only here to bowl” brigade have missed out on a fabulous evening. More to the point they missed out on the opportunity to help raise funds for the Club. Yes, we made a tidy little profit into the bargain.

Keep them coming Social Club. There’s clearly a desire to support these winter social activities. That many Members and guests, coming out on a night like that, is surely evidence enough.

Yes, well done everyone who braved the elements. You were well rewarded, with a great evening, but it’s worth remembering you were also making a significant contribution to the health of the Club. Not just the profit we made, but the boost these functions make to our Club spirit and the very real value of keeping our little community in contact throughout the close season. Thank you all.

Don’t get me wrong, the meeting runs smoothly, everyone who wants to contribute can and does, Officers’ reports are circulated in advance, nothing is accepted by the Chairman unless on the agenda or amending what’s on the agenda and we all treat each other and each other’s contributions with respect. There’s even an Open Forum immediately after the AGM to allow free debate on issues not raised at the AGM.

So what’s my problem?

I used to call it the bog roll syndrome when I was Trades Union representative. Call a workplace meeting to discuss whether to have soft or hard paper and everyone would have an opinion and would be desperate to share it with everyone else. Call a meeting to discuss contracts and conditions of service and there’d be a deafening silence. I have to admit this was a Civil Service Union in the 70’s and 80’s though. Hardly a hotbed of militant activism.

There is a comparison to draw though. In our Club, the Membership is willing to discuss reimbursement of drivers’ expenses till the cows come home, but not a word is said about improving our performances on the green. There’s a superfluity of comment and advice on such meaty topics as whether to have one Finals’ Day or two, but not a dickie bird on minor issues like recruitment and maintenance of membership numbers. Don’t point out those issues were not on the agenda; I know that, my very point is, the Membership does not put such issues on the agenda. Anyway, these issues were opened in the Officers’ reports, but no one had any comment to add or questions to ask.

As with the mundane matters, like taking the rubbish sacks to the tip, the Membership still believes in the magic of fairies. Who else do they think performs all these little minor miracles? Surely they don’t think it’s the Club’s Officers and Managers. Who else do they think tackles the major issues, like the very future of the Club, on their behalf? Surely not the Executive Committee. Then again, maybe they do. Maybe the Membership is happy to abdicate all responsibility for the club, its wellbeing and its future to the Executive; let someone else do the thinking and the graft. Maybe that’s why there’s a total lack of new volunteers to take on any of these responsibilities.

Yes, once again all the Club’s Officers and Managers were re-elected without opposition. The only exceptions were the two Captains and the Competitions Secretary and Committee.

Our new Captains are Mike McGrath as Club Captain, with Greg Fish as his Vice-Captain and Angela Fish as Ladies’ Captain, with Hazel Waldon as her Vice-Captain. We all wish them every success and the Club every success under their leadership on the green.

The “Contacts” element on our home page has been updated, though I’ve forgotten how to create the hyperlink to the e-mail addresses. I’ll have to consult my son again.

As to the Competitions Secretary and Committee, well what can I say? There were no volunteers and unless they come forward by the end of January, there will be no Club Competitions next year.

Now don’t get me wrong, the Club is in a very healthy state. Our membership numbers remain healthy, our finances are sound and we continue to improve the facilities we offer. Our green of course remains one of the best in the West and this winter we have already invested heavily in major treatment to ensure it runs even better next year.

So, why the glum reflections on last Saturday’s AGM? I don’t know, maybe it’s my constant disappointment in the human race as a whole, maybe it’s just my disappointment in the reluctance shown by the majority of our Members to put themselves out and contribute to the success of our Club.

Perhaps my point will be proved when we get no “comments” on this posting.
All the Club Trophies have now been inscribed with this year’s winners and all the plaques have been done as well. If you’ve got one to pick up they will be available at the AGM. The trophies for singles competitions will be presented at the Annual Dinner/Dance if you wish.

It would be helpful if you were to let the Club Secretary, Ian Tweedie, know if you want your trophy presented at the Annual Dinner/Dance.

The AGM is of course this Saturday, 7th November, at 10.30am. That’s the time we start by the way, not the time to arrive and start looking for a seat.

The Annual Dinner/Dance is on Friday, 20th November. You can hand in your booking slips at the AGM

I’ve just got home from our Halloween Lunch and as usual our homemade soups were praised as hitting just the right spot.

Mushroom, Leek & Potato and a Spicy Parsnip Soup were on offer, all served with chunks of a variety of different breads, chopped parsley, garlic croutons and of course cream for those not watching their figures. There was more than enough for second helpings all round, indeed I rather think there was a third helping in at least one quarter, but I wouldn’t dream of publishing names.

Being Halloween, the soups were followed by a startling array of different versions of Pumpkin Pie, all homemade of course. Just in case there were those not brave enough to try Pumpkin Pie, there were also Apple, Coconut or Treacle alternatives. Needless to say all were served with cream. I still haven’t found out who licked the cream cartons out. I know I got to the one that went into the Parsnip Soup, but someone must have moved fast to beat me to the others.

Tea or Coffee rounded it all of to perfection.

Those of you who didn’t make it were the losers; we all had a great time. You’ll be mad to miss out on the next soup lunch.

Thanks go to our resident soup chefs, our bread king and all the cooks who turned out the desserts.

As part of this winter’s work on maintaining and improving our facilities, we’re investing heavily in our green. Well we are a bowling club and if we can’t continue to offer the best possible playing surface, we’re not getting our priorities right.

There’s no doubt our green was not as fast as some would have liked this last season and the cause was almost certainly the softness of the under-soil. Our magnificent green keeper, John Swift, therefore recommended removing a ton or so of plugs from the green and backfilling with a several tons of sand and soil dressing.

This of course is one of those jobs where weather conditions are critical. John and his son Danny not only had to plan the work around the weather but around the needs of other clubs having the same job done whilst the specialist equipment is on hire.

Today was our day for removing the plugs and having the dressing delivered.

Now the removal of the plugs is a one-man job, John steering the kit around the green leaving thousands of plugs where they come out. The rest of the job is decidedly labour intensive, far too much for Danny to manage alone. The plugs have to be gathered with soft scoops, a little like snow shovels and then lifted onto wheelbarrows to be taken away. Here we were very lucky, in that B&NES Parks Department was able to make use of the plugs right outside our gate, so no great distance for the barrows.

Five pallets, two hundred sacks in all, of dressing were delivered at 9.30am. At this stage we were far more concerned with getting all the plugs off the green before the forecast rain arrived. Again B&NES Parks Department came to our aid and allowed the delivery lorry to unload the pallets in their depot, on the understanding we would have it all out by the end of the week.

Our team of volunteers were so efficient with the removal of the plugs that we were able to press on with transferring the dressing to the Club. Johns Swift’s van, Bob’s van and my trailer were put to full use in the transfer and we got the whole lot done before 1.00pm.

The only reason we got so much done in so short a time was the magnificent response to my appeal for volunteer labourers and of course the efforts of John and Danny Swift.

So, I’m going to break my usual protocol on here and name the volunteers who went to with a will. I’m offering, on behalf of all the other Club Members, a very big “thank you” to John Maggs, John Nix, John Mead, Bob Harris, Alan Brown, Eric Church, Nigel Newbery, Derek Phelps and Ian Tweedie. On behalf of those just named, I’ll also offer our thanks to Mike Smart; not able to pull his weight on a barrow any more, but we really did appreciate the teas and coffees.

I might add, most of those volunteers also give their time regularly to the Monday morning Winter Work Crew, so it was two days in a row for some of us. Feel free to express your thanks to these Club stalwarts; any time, any place, most of us drink cider.

That’s it then, many hands made light work of it and the rest of the Club and all our visitors will reap the benefit for several seasons to come, we hope.

This one is of course, for Club Members only. It’s just a quick reminder of the two key dates for this year’s AGM.

Friday 23rd October.

This is the deadline for motions to this year’s AGM. Only motions with the Club Secretary, in writing, by midnight of this date can appear on the agenda for the AGM. The Chairman will, as usual, not allow motions from the floor or any abuse of the agenda item “Any Other Business”. Amendments to motions on the agenda will be accepted from the floor, unless of course they are a direct negation of the motion in the papers.

Saturday 7th November.

This year’s AGM will come to order at 10.30am sharp, in the Clubhouse.

Nominations for Club Officers and Managers will close at 10.30am, as the AGM comes to order. As usual, no nominations will be accepted from the floor.

Immediately at the close of the AGM, there will be another Open Forum. This is the usual opportunity for Members to raise any matter of concern or interest not tabled on the agenda. Members are reminded this is not a decision making meeting and there will be no formal motions and no agenda. It is however expected our new Executive and Sub-Committee members will attend and take note of comments made for future discussion and possible decisions within the relevant Committee/Sub-Committee.
So here’s the updated notice. Get the new date in your diary now and please let Margaret or myself know if this means you want to cry off or add your name to the list of entrants.

I only got to hear about this from my brother Paul. He knew Henlow was one of the clubs we played whilst on tour last month.

It grieves me to report their premises were burgled last Thursday and they lost a new scarifier and two mowers. I believe the value was up in the £5000 range. Our tourists and indeed our club as a whole offer our sympathies to Henlow Bowling Club and hope they get their equipment back undamaged and that the culprits get what they deserve. They won’t of course, even if caught the law does not allow appropriate penalties.

Don’t these people know how much effort goes into raising the funds for such equipment and all by volunteers? The answer of course is in the negative, not that they would care if they did know.

It’s sickening to see the lengths some clubs have to go to keep their premises free from vandalism and theft. Local communities should take a pride in all bowling clubs. We all try to be a part of our communities and provide valuable contributions to healthier lifestyles, particularly for those of retirement age. Our local communities should be doing their bit to protect us from both vandalism and theft.

Just in case we have any readers with a tendency to regard Bowling Clubs as easy targets, I’ll make it quite clear here and now; we employ an outside contractor to care for our green and consequently don’t have any such equipment stored here. In fact we keep nothing of value here, indeed over winter there are not even any of our players’ bowls or shoes on the premises.
